A lot has changed since the beginning of the digital revolution. It’s easier than ever to stay in touch at any hour through email, text, social media and more. Thanks to that technology, we also have to revolutionize the way we do business and socialize.  But at what price?

It is becoming increasingly more difficult to detach yourself from the ever buzzing digital world.  Experts state that around 90% of us have our mobile devices within arms reach at all times.

So how do we ensure that the stress of social media and digital usage is not affecting our well-being?

  1. Start Your Day Off Right

The first hour of your morning can set the tone for your entire day. Keep your mornings as stress free as possible. Resist the temptation to immediately check your email, text messages or even the news. Instead enjoy a few quiet moments with a cup of coffee and a magazine or book.

  1. Look for People Who Inspire You

This can be applied to all relationships within your life. It’s important to surround yourself with positive influences and sources of inspiration.  Focus on surrounding yourself with those who can teach you, motivate you or inspire you. The key is to “Marie Kondo” your digital closet and follow only those who spark joy.

  1. Declutter your Digital Life

It’s amazing what a couple “unsubscribes” will do for your mental well being. Take a couple minutes every week to unsubscribe from anything unnecessary that has made its way into your inbox. Delete any unneeded emails and finally unfriend the old high school classmates you wouldn’t even say “hi” to on the street. Decluttering helps you to focus better.

  1. Search Out People Who Challenge You

Have you heard of the term “Group Think?” The Dictionary describes it as “the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group in a way that discourages creativity or individual responsibility.” Group think can be dangerous for any company, which is why great managers look for people with different perspectives and new ideas. Fresh perspectives help you think outside the box leading to increased efficiency, innovative solutions and a happier workplace. Discouraging group think is the most effective way to make progress in any industry. Revolutionary changes were made by those who think outside of the box.

So why would your personal life be any different? Surrounding yourself with people who challenge you or have alternate points of view will help you step outside your comfort zone.

  1. Take Stock of Your Digital Time

It’s important to take a few minutes to assess how you are spending your time digitally.  Did you spend two hours watching YouTube videos on woodworking techniques? Or peruse Pinterest for dinner inspiration?  If the time you are spending is inspiring you or teaching you, then it’s time well spent. If not, look to find a way to use that time in a way that benefits you more.  This time provides value to your day and in some cases can actually help you be more productive with your time.

  1. Use Technology to Help Reduce Stress

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of apps available at your fingertips to help organize your life, teach you new skills or provide inspiration. There are even apps that can help you to slow down and be more mindful of how you spend your day. Use technology as a tool to cut out the stress in your life, not add to it.

The main key in maintaining your digital well being is to be mindful of any additional stress it may be bringing into your life. And if it brings stress, then find a way to replace it with something that brings you joy.
