It’s so important when choosing the perfect job that you focus not just on the position but also on the environment, the coworkers and most importantly your potential boss.  How much you like your coworkers will determine 90% of your happiness at the office. So how can you avoid working for a boss that is going to make you miserable? Look for these traits in a potential employer.

They are Coaches and Cheerleaders –

Coaching managers are focus on developing the people they work with as well as getting the job done. They ensure you have regular one-on-one meetings with team members.  Their goal being to provide guidance as well as get updates. More importantly, their objective is to also provide YOU a chance to give feedback. They encourage you to present solutions to problems, rather than solving the problems for you.  They are focus on providing you with the environment you need to succeed. That may mean shielding the team from bureaucracy. making sure you have the right working space to be productive or providing you with the resources needed to get the job done.

They are effective communicators –

The ability of a leader to set a direction and communicate it effectively is a critical skill of a great manager. This is most important in the tech industry, which requires the ability to communicate to a broad range of personality type, oftentimes requiring you to cater your communication to suit an array of different communication styles in order to be most effective.  Effective communicators don’t just communicate verbally or written, but also lead by example by setting the standard for everyone around them. Lastly, effective communicating managers know how to communicate upward to superiors and laterally to other departments. This keeps the organization at large in sync and make sure that their team is contributing meaningfully to the broader company.

They Care…. Really –

Good managers know that employees don’t just need to just be content within their 9-5 but also enjoy their lives outside of work. Successful managers know and respect this. They avoid calling you during your days off, or writing critical emails late into the evening. They are focused on your well-being not just your work. A study from the University of Warwick, found that happiness results in a 12 percent spike in employee productivity. The study also found that unhappy workers were 10 percent less productive than the average. This proves that happy employees are more productive, more creative, and work more collaboratively with their teams.

Another way they care is by fostering your career development. The Excel SoftSources leadership teams prides itself on focusing on employee retention through career development.  Leaders should always be focused on develop their team’s skills whether that be through mentorship, training opportunities or certification.

They are Result-Oriented-

Result-oriented managers are focused on reaching the end goal. Meaning, they are not shy about getting their hands dirty right by their employees in order to get the job done.  They regularly work with their team to ensure roadblocks are removed, tasks are being completed and the team is on track.

My favorite bosses, including my current Excel SoftSources boss, trust you to maintain your time effectively. They focus on your completed tasks and goals – not on counting the minutes you’re away from your desk.  The result is – a healthier work life balance that’s achieved by offering more flexibility, whether that be flexible hours or working from home options.

They are trustworthy AND they trust you-

Managers have a tough job in calibrating when their team requires their input—and, just as importantly, when they’re better off left alone.

Great managers are accessible when needed, but know not to hover. One of the most frustrating job complaints is having unnecessary supervision on a task you are fully capable of completing on our own. High performing teams require very little supervision and good leaders know when to step in, and when not get involved.  Further, promoting a culture of accountability is crucial in some complex environments, where no manager can ever have full visibility into what his or her team is doing.

They possess Emotional Intelligence –

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, and those of the people around you. People with a high degree of emotional intelligence know what they’re feeling, what their emotions mean, and how these emotions can affect other people.

A manager that can’t relate to his or her team on an emotional level will struggle to build the camaraderie and trust necessary to cooperate and do good work. It’s important that managers spend the time to develop their team members, ensuring better performance in the future and ultimately improving efficiency.

If you want to work for a company with leaders that possess all these qualities come work with us at Excel SoftSources. We are always on the lookout for skilled people with great attitudes to join our team.
